The Village of Calumet Park Public Works Department mission is to provide essential services to our community and infrastructure to enhance the residents and businesses everyday lives.
The Director of Public Works is responsible for overseeing the Department services to its citizens through the planning, operation, maintenance, and construction management of the Village’s public infrastructure. The Department’s responsibilities include operation and maintenance of the Village streets and alleys, street lights, garbage, sewers, distribution of water, collection and sampling of water, and permitting regulation of public and private construction. The Department is staffed with a trained workforce of approximately 7 employees.

Yard Waste & Snow Removal Regulations
Fall & Winter Notice
As we move into the fall season and prepare for winter, please review the following important information regarding yard waste, leaf disposal, and snow removal. These rules help keep our streets safe, prevent flooding, and maintain clean public spaces throughout the Village.
YARD WASTE REGULATIONS
Ordinance #02-783
Tree branches and yard waste must be properly prepared before disposal:

Branches must be cut to lengths of 4 feet or less and tied.

All yard waste must be placed next to your household garbage toter, making sure it does not block the alleyway.

Republic services is responsible for ALL garbage removal including branches and large items.
Ordinance #02-804
Improper leaf disposal is prohibited:

It is against Village ordinance to sweep, blow, or pile leaves or any yard waste into the street, gutter, or curb.

This applies to both homeowners and any contractors you hire.

Violations may result in tickets and fines up to $1,000.
Yard debris in the street can clog storm sewers and lead to flooding and water backups into homes.
WINTER SNOW REMOVAL REGULATIONS
Ordinance #03-812
The following rules apply to all residents, businesses, and property owners:
Commercial and multi-family properties may not shovel or plow snow into public streets, sidewalks, or onto neighboring properties.
Snow piles may not exceed 3 feet in height within 20 feet of any street corner or intersection.
No person may blow, shovel, or push snow:
1. Onto another person’s property
2. Onto any public sidewalk
3. Into the street
4. Into any area where it may create a hazard for pedestrians, traffic, or homeowners
The proper place to pile snow is on your own lawn or open space on your property.
APPLICABLE ILLINOIS STATE LAWS
Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-1411)
It is illegal to place anything on a public roadway that may block traffic or create a hazard.
Snow pushed into the street is considered:

An obstruction
-
A roadway hazard
-
A danger to motorists
-
Calumet Park WILL cite residents or businesses for pushing snow back into the street after plows pass.
Illinois Criminal Damage to Property (720 ILCS 5/21-1)
A person may be cited if pushing snow into the street contributes to property damage or an accident.
Illinois Tort Immunity Act
Residents and businesses may not create hazards (such as snow piles or yard waste) in public rights-of-way.
Municipalities may issue citations or fines for these violations.
